CHANA - Wilkie A. "Peanuts" Engelkes, 81, lifelong Chana resident, died Wednesday February 14, 2007 in Oregon Health Care Center after a battle with cancer. Born July 21, 1925 in Chana, the youngest son of Wilke and Katie Reinema Engelkes. Married to Betty Catherine Grindley April 17, 1948 in Paynes Point; she died June 30, 1990. He was a graduate of Rochelle High School. Wilkie was a World War 2 army veteran, serving 3 years in the Pacific corridor after landing at New Hebrides. He often told stories of sleeping in a fox hole for 4 months straight. He had been employed at Schiller Piano Factory in Oregon and then Del Monte Foods in Rochelle. He was a past member of Oregon VFW Post 8739. Survived by his daughter, Marilyn (Mike) Cain of Oregon; sons: Steve (Wanda) Engelkes of Milan and Mark (Barbara) Engelkes of Orange Park, Fla.;grandchildren: Zack and Micah Cain, Brian Engelkes and Kristin & Caleb Engelkes; and sisters: Louise Kersten of Franklin Grove, Elsie Hamas of Dixon and Erda Johnson of Rockford. Also preceded by brothers: Albert, Hiram, Clarence and August; and sisters: Margaret and Amanda. Services will be held at 2:00pm Monday Feb. 19 in Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon, preceded by visitation beginning at 1:00pm.Burial in Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery at Paynes Point with military honors. In lieu of flowers in this cold weather, memorials may be made to Ogle County Hospice
