Russell Parmelee, age 102, of Hopkins, passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at his home. Mr. Parmelee was born October 19, 1911 the son of Willis and Lucy Parmelee on the farm on 18th Street (Russell could remember back when it had been just a dirt track past his house) that his grandparents settled in 1856. He graduated from Hopkins High School in 1929 and went on to attend Michigan Agricultural College (now MSU). His college education was interrupted by a bout with pleurisy causing him to drop out for a year. During his recuperation he fondly remembers breaking the last four acres of ground that is still tilled today. Russell went on to graduate with a Bachelor Degree in Agriculture Science in 1934. In 1935, he married Helen Wilcox (1911-1991), the "girl next door". For about a year after college, he worked as an agent for the US Department of Agriculture and as a herdsman near Beulah, Michigan. When his father-in-law was injured in a buzz saw accident, he returned to the Wilcox farm and has lived there ever since. Together he and Helen managed and operated the Wilcox and Parmelee farms. Community service was important to Russell. He served on the Hopkins Board of Education, Hopkins Township Board of Review, and the Allegan Soil Conservation District Board. He is a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Wayland where he is also Deacon Emeritus. Up to just before his 100th birthday, Russell enjoyed mowing large areas on his farm with his Ford 8N tractor and Mott mower. He enjoyed gardening and reading. His favorite book was the Bible, which he had read cover to cover several times just within the past few years. To what does he owe his longevity? To hard work, a clean and honest living, and most of all to the marvelous grace of his loving Lord. Russell and Helen had three children: Georgia Ann (Robert Jeffery) of Conway, AR; Jim (Killed In Action, Vietnam, 1965); and John (Bonnie) of Bangor, MI. He has five grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 from Noon until the time of the Funeral at 2:00 P.M. at Gorden Funeral Residence, Hopkins Chapel. Pastor Tim Mattison and Pastor Richard Dix will be officiating. Interment is at Maplewood Cemetery, Hopkins Township. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to: RBM Ministries, care of, The Tim Cornish Family, 5325 West F Avenue, Kalamazoo, Michigan 49009; and/or: First Baptist Church of Wayland, 3514 12th Street, Wayland, Michigan 49348.
