Richard "Dick" Neil Askeland of Rochelle, Illinois, died at home with family by his side on September 20, 2010 after a short battle with cancer. He was 71. Dick was born at his family's farm home in Creston on June 30, 1939, to Arthur Clarence and Florence Myrtle (Hill) Askeland, who went by Myrtle. He married Judith Ann Sage on May 25, 1963 at St. Patrick's church in Rochelle. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His skills as a plumber and gifted repair person were well known and led to his nickname, "Mr. Fix-it." Generous with his time and abilities, Dick was always quick to help out anyone in need. He was a member the Local #23 Plumber & Pipe-fitters Union for 41 years, working the last 14 years of his career at the Byron Nuclear Power Plant. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Michael John Askeland. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Judi; children Cheryl "Cheri" Eileen Askeland Hayes and husband Mike Hayes of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania; David Lee Askeland and his wife Jenifer Ann Gildea Askeland of Rochelle; Danny Robert Askeland and his wife Amy Marie Prather Askeland, also of Rochelle; brother Donald Owen Askeland of Sycamore, IL; uncle Lawrence E. Askeland of Rochelle; grandchildren William "Will" Michael Hayes and Kiley Alexandra Hayes of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania: Zachary Richard Askeland, Nate Michael Askeland and Emily Lynn Bradford of Rochelle; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Ogle County Hospice Association- PO BOX 462 Oregon, IL 61061 or the Sandra J. Visitation will take place from 5-7pm on Thursday, September 23, at Unger-Horner Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at the Unger Horner Funeral Home on Friday, September 24, 2010 at 10am with Father Steven Lange officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick Cemetery in Rochelle.
