Death:Tuesday, April 17, 2012
Ogle Co, Illinois

Lawrence "Larry" Edward Askeland, 85, of Rochelle, Illinois, died at home with his great nephew Dan Askeland by his side on April 17, 2012, after battling congestive heart failure. He was born on November 16, 1926, in Lindenwood to Ole A. and Anna Dorthea (Norby) Askeland. Larry grew up on a farm with his 9 siblings just north of Illinois route 64. Larry served two tours of duty with the U.S. Navy. He first enlisted in the U.S. Navy on November 20, 1945, at the age of 19. He did his 8 weeks of training in San Diego. Because of his farming background and the understanding of how machines worked, he was assigned the job of machinist's mate, 3rd class. Larry was assigned to the USS Grand Canyon AD-28 and spent six months near Naples, Italy. He was discharged in October 1947, after completing his enlistment service. He immediately enlisted in the Naval Reserves and moved back to Creston with his family. He again volunteered for a period of 18 months of active duty on January 21, 1951, during the Korean War. He was assigned to the USS Wisconsin BB-64, which was one of 4 battleships which rotated in a 6 month tour off the coast of Korea. Larry was honorably discharged as a MML 2 (machinist's mate petty officer 2nd class, equivalent to a staff sergeant) on October 25, 1955, at the end of his tour. Again returning to Creston, Larry worked alongside his brother Teddy doing construction work. He retired as a carpenter. Larry was a member of the VFW, an avid Cubs fan who also enjoyed the Chicago Bears and had a passion for horse racing, placing many a wager after doing his thorough research. He was always the gentleman and would help anyone in need. He will be remembered to many as a man who would give you the shirt off his back and for his impeccable memory. He could always be relied on for the accuracy of his many stories and dates. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his 9 siblings: Lillian Mickley Hintzsche, Arthur C. Askeland, Alice Hill, Laura Zimmerman, Ole & Thorval (twins) Askeland, Theodore (Teddy) Askeland, Lenora Askeland and Wilbur Askeland. He is survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Visitation will take place from 9:30am to 10:45am on Monday, April 23, 2012, at Unger-Horner Funeral Home in Rochelle, with funeral services following at 11:00am, with Rev. Cindy Marino officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Creston with military honors provided by the Eastern Lee-Ogle Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial contributions be made to the family of Lawrence Askeland. The family is setting up a memorial.
