Judge Richard Joseph Rome, 79, died June 15, 2014, at his home in Hutchinson. He was born Sept. 19, 1934, in Topeka, Kan., the son of Seraphine and Clara (Stang) Rome.

Richard graduated from Hayden High School, Topeka, in 1952. He then graduated from Bethany College in Lindsborg and received his law degree from the University of Kansas School of Law. Richard served for two years in the United States Army. He worked for many years in varying capacities as a judge, defense attorney, prosecutor, and assistant U.S. Attorney. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Cross and the Knights of Columbus as a Fourth Degree Knight.

On June 25, 1960, he married Marianne Elisabeth Grauers in Hutchinson. She died Sept. 24, 2005.

Other survivors include: a son, John Andrew Rome of Redwood City, Calif.; a daughter, Christina Elisabeth Edwards, and husband Matt of Leawood, Kan.; sister, Norma Jean Schaffer of Topeka; grandchildren, Zachary Jacob Rome, Andrew Ã?ke Rome, Kerstin Marianne Rome, Lauren Elisabeth Edwards, Mason Matthew Edwards, and Evan Joseph Edwards. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and son, Thomas Joseph Rome; as well as a sister, Patricia Miller.

Parish rosary will be 7 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2014, and Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2014, both at the Church of the Holy Cross, celebrated by Father Joseph Eckberg. Burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Topeka, Kan. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Catholic Relief Services, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
