John "Jack" Southworth Dame, 91 of Rochelle, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011 at Rochelle Gardens Care Center. Jack was born on Jan. 5, 1920 in Rochelle, the son of Ralph and Ruth (Southworth) Dame. He graduated from St. Patrick Catholic School and Rochelle Township High School and attended Western Illinois University for two years. He married Rogene L. Oakes on Nov. 8, 1941 in Rochelle and she preceded him in death on Oct. 26, 2001. He was also preceded by his parents, and sister: Sarah Jane Hubbard.
At the age of 23, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII. He served in the Philippines, on the islands of New Guinea, Leyte and Luzon, Japan, as a pontoneer, where he supervised 50 men in the construction of various types of bridges. After an honorable discharge in 1946, he continued his career at Del Monte Corp., ultimately becoming the Plant Superintendent at #199 Distribution Center. He designed the working operation of the plant and on his retirement, they named the road leading into the plant after him. Memberships include VFW Post #3878 and St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Survivors include his children: Bob (Cathie) Dame of Rochelle, Ginny (Gary) Gustafson of Endwell, NY and Sharon (Bob) Stoddard of Rochelle; grandchildren: Kelsey (Kris) Milos, Kristen, Karley, and Grace Dame, Rich Stoddard, Greg (Cathey) Stoddard, Debra (Rex) Brown, Scott (Jenny) Gustafson, and Dana (Jeff) Pilarcek; 16 great grandchildren; and sister: Ruthann (William) Capriola.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Rochelle on Monday, Dec. 5, 2011 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Steven Lange. Visitation at Unger-Horner Funeral Home in Rochelle on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011 from 2 to 5:00 with Rosary Service at 5:00 PM. Memorials to St. Patrick Catholic Church. Entombment at Lawnridge Mausoleum.
