Genar E. Meservey, 69, of Marshall, died Monday, June 17, 2013 at the University of Michigan Hospital following a year-long illness. He was born on October 9, 1943 in Quincy, Illinois to Harold E. and Helen (Ribko) Meservey. As he was entering high school the family moved to Marshall where he quickly acclimated, became a standout basketball and football player, and senior class president. Following his graduation, Genar attended Western Michigan University and Olivet College.

In 1977, he began working as a designer/salesman at Michigan Kitchen Distributors, a position he held for thirty-five years. Outside his professional work, his talents included beautiful calligraphy on envelopes of celebratory cards and high school diplomas. Genar eagerly supported the community through his membership in the Marshall Jaycees where he served as President and Regional Director and was recognized for his work including the Junior Miss local and state pageants held in Marshall. He also devoted his time as Treasurer for State Representative Dan Angel, volunteered at the Oaklawn Hospital Auxiliary's gift shop, and served on the Michigan Week committee. Friends and family all knew that "Big G" could be available most mornings on his stool at Kate's Diner in downtown Marshall if they needed a good chat and a cup of coffee.

An avid sportsman, he enjoyed golfing, watching NASCAR races with his son-in-law and discussing MSU real-time play-by-plays on the phone with his Texas-based son. A Marshall athletic team booster, six foot seven "Gunner" could not be missed on the sidelines where he served as the chain gang down marker for nearly fifty years. His enthusiasm for sports was evident whether he was cheering on Michigan State, a pro team, or a game of a grandchild's chosen sport.

He is survived by his children Lisa (Chad) Hazel of Marengo, Mark E. Meservey of Austin Texas, Beth Kirkby, Todd (Michelle) Kirkby of Coppell, Texas; his significant other, Karen Yankie of Albion; grandchildren Brandon (Nancy) Meservey, Autumn and Austin Hazel, Sullivan Meservey, Sydney and Chelsea Peloquin, and Max, Macie and Mitch Kirkby; great-grand-daughter Madelyn Meservey; sisters Kathleen (Michael) Hilla of Harsens Island, Michigan and Beverly (Patrick) Freeman of Fort Myers, Florida; brother Mark A. (Amy Timmer) Meservey of East Lansing; niece and god-daughter Caitlin Meservey, nephews Matthew Genar (Christine) Hilla and Michael (Erica) Hilla, and former wives Lynn Dorman Meservey and Donna Parrott Kirkby Meservey. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will take place at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home on Thursday, June 20, 2013, from 2-8 pm with family present from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. Funeral services celebrating his life will take place at 10 am on Friday, June 21, 2013, at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall with Reverend James Codde officiating. A private interment will take place at a later date. Family and friends will gather in the Kempf Funeral Home Reception Hall following the service.

The family requests any memorial contributions be made to the Marshall Athletic Boosters, Oaklawn Hospital Birth Center, or to the Calhoun County Relay for Life. Assistance with memorials is available at the Kempf Funeral Home.
