Donald Franklin "Don" Danner

I am in peace. --Kahlil Gibran Donald Franklin "Don" Danner, Rochelle, passed away at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at home with his family around him. Don was born at home January 20, 1937, to Dorothy (Brummet) Danner and David T. Danner. He attended Homer, IL Grade and High Schools, and graduated from Homer High School in 1956, where he was an exceptional athlete, excelling in basketball, track, and football. Upon graduation Don commenced farming for Dale Wolf of rural Homer. Don married Terry Lynn Jinks on February 26, 1961. Together they had two children, Cathy Lea (Roy) Peters of Ottawa, IL and Tim (Becky) Danner of Rochelle, IL, two grandchildren, Matthew Doolan and Vicky Adams, and one great grandchild, Matthew Spartz. Don was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and brother Lewis Danner. Three brothers still living are John (Betty) Danner of Sumerfield, FL, Robert (Sandy) Danner of Homer, IL, and Charles (Rhonda) Danner of Metamora, IL. In 1962 Don and Terry moved to Milwaukee, WI where Don was employeed as a switchman for the C&NW Railroad until injuring his back in 1979. They then moved to Rochelle, IL in 1982 after purchasing a hardware store that they operated for 5 years. For the remaining years he worked at helping out friends and family in small construction, plumbing, and electrical projects. He and Terry have also spent a lot of time restoring a Victorian home. Until the final days of his life, Terry says that she had never known him to have soft hands. They were working hands. Don was a very devoted family man. One of his great pleasures was to go camping with his family. There were many enjoyable short and long trips throughout the years. He was a man of quick wit and a ready smile. He leaves a legacy of love and laughter. Visitation will be from 4 - 7 pm on Sunday, September 26, 2010 at the Unger Horner Funeral Home, 400 N 6th St. Rochelle. In Lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established. Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at the Homer Methodist Church. There will be a visitation in Homer, IL at the Kirby Funeral Home on Monday from 4 - 7 pm, and also at the Church from 10 - 11 am Tuesday prior to service. Burial at the G.A.R. Cemetery in Homer, IL.
