  • Obituary, 1 FEB 1939: Notes: William Henry McGladery, a Launceston, Tasmania, Australia native, early known for amature running & roller skating ability, died at his home, Charles St., Launceston; of heart trouble brought on due to war service. While serving in Artillery, A. I. F. (First Australian Imperial Force), WWI in France, gassed at Ypres, Belgium (likely at Third Battle of Ypres, 1917). Invalided first to England for a period of six months and later to Australia at War's end.

    While in England, he did clerical work for "Sir Henry Maudsley" (perhaps Henry Maudsley [1835-1918], the pioneering psychiatrist. After a general education and having apprenticed in accountancy with Cruickshank and Creasey, he went into the family bookmaking business with his father and later, after his death, a partnership with his brother, Charles McGladery. Licensed and known in Northern Tasmania as a licensed professional conducting himself on a "high basis" and known for a "cheerful disposition and straightforward character."

    Survived by his wife, a daughter and a son, his mother, and three brothers, Gordon (Sydney), Fred, Charles; and two sisters, Mrs. A. A. Newton and Mrs. L. W. Smith, of Launceston.
    The funeral will take place the next day.

  • Obituary, 2 NOV 1954: Notes: Mrs. Edith Martha [Edith Martha Edwards] McGladery, 84, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia native, and lifelong resident, 30 years widow of Andrew McGladery, and involved with the Chamers Presbyterian Church.

    Seven children were the product of the union: four sons, who proceeded her in death: Gordon [Andrew Gordon McGladery], William [William Henry McGladery] Charles [Charles Andrew McGladery], and Bert McGladery [Bertram Baden McGladery] and, 3 children survive: Mrs. Nell [Nellie Emma McGladery] Newman (Alec), Mrs. May [Ethel May McGladery] Smith (L. W.), and Fred McGladery [Fredrick Samuel McGladery].
