  • Obituary, 27 MAY 1863: ""Obituary.'.... DIED at noon Sunday, May 24th, 1863, David Cathcart, aged seventy nine years. Fifty years ago he was the only teacher of the leading English school in Cincinnati, and met with great success. In those days the schoolmaster had close personal relations with those children he taught, and he had their patronage. He afterwards lived in Dayton, and for many years was post-master there. Ten years ago he came to Urbana and has since resided here. He has lived a very retired life, taking a great interest in horticulture, that most beautiful of all pursuits of old men, which at once bespeaks a calm philosophy and pleasant mind.

  • Obituary, 19 JUN 1863: "'A PIONEER TEACHER GONE.' Mr. David Cathcart, formerly of Cinncinati, and one of the pioneer teachers of Ohio, died at his late residence at Urbana, on Sunday afternoon, May 24th, in his 79th year. Mr. C. came to Cincinnati in 1812, and taught at a school in a small brick school-house near what is now the northwest corner of Fourth and Walnut streets. After Cincinnati College was built on Walnut-st, or near the ground now occupied by College Hall, he was employed as a teacher in it. He continued teaching in Cincinnati till 1829. Mr. Symmes, Judge Torrence, Mr. Longworth and others, were among his old patrons, and many citizens of Cincinnati will remember him as their former teacher.

He was modest and retiring in his habits, upright in his dealing, stern in his integrity, and for many years a member of New Jerusalem or Swedenborgian Church --Cin. Gazette
