Admitted to New York Bar, 1905, and began practice in New York City; member Hall, Cunningham, Jackson and Haywood; president Trojan Powder Company, The Duriron Company, St. Mary's National Bank, St. Mary's Trust Company; vice-president Speer Carbon Company, International Graphite and Electrode Corporation; director Russell Snow Plow Company, General Re-insurance Corporation, North Star Insurance Company, Greenwich Trust Company; member Advisory Committee Grand Central Branch of Chase National Bank. Appointed by Secretary of Labor Wilson national director of United States Public Service Reserve, April 1917, operating during war period under Department of Labor for recruiting labor for war plants and moving to essential centers; also national director United States Boys' Working Reserve and acting assistant director general United States Employment Service; secretary and member of executive committee Commission for Relief in Belgium, 1914-15.

President Boys' Clubs of America, Inc.; vice-chairman, New York City Commission on Crime Prevention, 1928-33; trustee Children's Aid Society (New York City). President National Institute of Social Sciences (awarded gold medal for "service to humanity" 1936). Appointed by President Wilson member War Meat Commission, 1918. Awarded medal by King Albert of Belgium for feeding Belgians, 1914-15; awarded Silver Buffalo by Boy Scouts of America for national service in the welfare of boyhood, 1931; awarded medal for 30 years meritorious service by Boys' Clubs of America, Inc., 1939. Member executive committee Greenwich Community Chest and Council; chairman executive committee Greenwich Boys' Club. Member Association of the Bar of the City of New York; Berzelius Society (Yale). Clubs: Yale, Union League, Berzelius (New York City); Greenwich Field; Round Hill (past president). Church: Episcopal (senior warden of Christ Church) .
