In the early 1870s, Hecker was a superintendent of the Ulster and Delaware Railroad, then known as the New York, Kingston & Syracuse Railroad, and this is where he met his business partner, Charles Lang Freer. His daughter Anna Cynthia was born in Kingston and married Freer's brother, Watson, who, like his brother, was a Kingston native.
