  • Obituary, 31 JUL 1914: "EIGHTY FIVE YEARS WITHOUT A DOCTOR: This Is Record of S. M. McDowell, Who Died at Hunitata Thursday, of Pneumonia; SUBURB LOSES A NONAGENARIAN'

Samuel McGlathery McDowell, died in his 85th year last evening in the home of his son, W. R. McDowell, of 405 Fourth street, Juniata, his death, the result of embolic pneumonia. The deceased was a native of Centre county and was born near Warriorsmark, June 6, 1829. He was a man of more than ordinary physical health and never had a physician call on him professionally until the day before he died. In his more active years McDowell followed the trade of wheelwright and also worked in lumbering, delighting in later life to recall his experiences in the big woods and on the river. A large part of his life was spent in Clearfield county, during the past decade he made his home with his home with his sons in Altoona and Juntina, expanding his gradually declining energy in long walks about our surrounding area. The deceased was in every respect a courteous gentleman and a good citizen. He was a lifelong Methodist, active in the field of his religious faith and conscientious in all his dealings. Surviving are one daughter and three sons: Mrs. A. C. Gearhart, of Juntina Gap; E. W. McDowell of this city; W. R. McDowell of Juntina; and P. B. McDowell of Bingham. Also two brothers and two sisters--George McDowell, of Frogtown, Clarion county; Charles McDowell of Clearfield; Mrs. Jane Tate, of Mahaffey, and Mrs. Myrtle Shirley, of Woodland. Brief service will be held in the home of W. R. McDowell with whom the aged father spent his last two years, on tomorrow evening at 8 o'clock and on Sunday morning the remains will be taken to Curwensville, where funeral services will be held and interment made in the family burial ground."
