Obituary, 11 APR 1939: "'REV. E. W. McDOWELL' Rev. Dr. Edmund Wilson McDowell, a native of Altoona and a retired Presbyterian missionary who was well known among the older residents of the city, died March 31 in Fort Collins, Colorado, the Presbyterian church in the United States of America announced Sunday in New York.
Born in this city, Dr. McDonald was in his eighty-second year. He visited here five years ago, addressing the adult department of the Presbyterian church at that time.
The missionary was graduated from Wooster college, Wooster, Ohio in 1884 and from the Western Theological seminary, Pittsburg, in 1887. He sailed for Persia in September, 1887, where he spent 43 years. He was instrumental in developing mission work in Urumia [sic. Urmia], Persia, organizing a chain of village, schools and churches.
Following the World war he was active on behalf of thousands of Assyrian Christians. He carried their appeal for aid to the League of Nations, the British high commissioner in Mesopotamia and the archbishop of Canterbury.
Since March 19, 1928, when he retired. Dr. McDowell has spent his time preaching and lecturing. When he was here in 1934, he visited his cousin, Miss Bell McGlathery, 1404 Eleventh street.
Members of the family include his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth McDowell, and two sons, Dr. Phillip C. McDowell, a member of the Presbyterian mission in Tegeran, Iran and Robert of Ann Arbor, Michigan. --" Altoona Tribune," Altoona, PA, 11 Apr 1939, Tue, 12. _______________
