DeWitt Street in Kingston, New York

From Kingston historian Edwin Millard Ford's book Street Whys: Anecdotes and Lore About the Streets of Kingston, New York, page 71

"Jacob H. DeWitt was born in Marbletown, New York, on October 2, 1784. While yet an infant, his parents, Col. Thomas DeWitt and Elsie Hasbrouck DeWitt moved to Twalfskill, now called Wilbur. Col. Thomas' sister, Mary, married Gen. James Clinton, New York State Governor George Clinton's brother, and became the mother of the fifth New York State Governor, DeWitt Clinton. Col. Thomas DeWitt commanded a regiment in the Continental Army and served through the entire period of the Revolutionary War. In 1812, his son Jacob H. DeWitt was adjutant of a regiment formed to fight the war against Great Britain and he subsequently received a commission as colonel. In 1819, and again in 1839, he was elected to the U.S. Congress. In 1847, he represented Ulster County in the New York State Legislature. On February 20, 1815, he married Mary Ann Meyer, who died in 1819 at age 22. In 1822, he married Sarah Ann Sleight. Jacob died on January 30, 1857. DeWitt street is named for him and his unmarried brother, Reuben."
