  • Obituary, 21 JUN 1929: "'A. R. McGlathery [Abraham Reed McGlathery]' A. R. McGlathery, for many years a farmer in the Pleasant Hills district, died about 9 o'clock Saturday morning at the home of his son, William [William Reed McGlathery], on his farm near Centerville, Kas. The body was brought to this city and funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the R. S. Farmer [Richard Simpson Farmer] home just south of town on Highway 7. The services was in charge of the Rev. J. W. Ward, with internment in Plesant Hill Cemetery. Four of Mr. McGlathery's children survive and were at the funeral. They are William [William Reed McGlathery] from Centerville; John [John Dudley McGlathery], Big Rapids, Mich.; Pearl [Pearl McGlathery] (Mrs. Harry Denham [Harry Nelson Denham]) Harrisonville, and Olive Grace [Olive Grace McGlathery] (Mrs. Richard Farmer [Richard Simpson Farmer]) this city. The other child [Jesse Belle McGlathery] died in infancy.

Abraham Reed McGlathery was born in Charleston, West Virginia, Nov. 16. 1850, and came to Missouri with his parents when he was seven years old, most of his subsequent life was spent in or near Pleasant Hill.

He was united with the M. E. Church, South, when a young man and remained a member of that church until death. He was married to Mrs. Maria Frye, March 12, 1876. She died Nov. 24, 1919. One sister also survives Mr. McGlathery, Mrs. Anna [Anna Malona McGlathery] Roberts, Hastings, Neb., and one brother, Geo. H. McGlathery [George Henry McGlathery], Kansas City, himself for many years afflicted with paralysis.

Of recent years Mr. McGlathery has spent his time at the home of his daughter, Mrs. [Pearl McGlathery] Denham, at Harrisonville, here with Mr. [Richard Simpson Farmer] & Mrs. [Olive Grace McGlathery] Farmer, or on the Centerville farm with "Billy" [William Reed McGlathery].

He had been seemingly unusually well the last few days[.] Friday evening he enjoyed his supper, had a romp with the children of the home [Florence McGlathery, Tena Louise McGlathery, and Josephine McGlathery], smoked a cigar and was in all-around good spirits. He was alright when he retired. But far in the night the son, William [William Reed McGlathery], heard an unusual noise in his father's room. He went in. The old gentleman could not speak, but pointed to his throat. It was being affected by a slow-spreading paralysis which had gripped him. Every effort was made in his behalf, but at about 9 a.m., Saturday, the end came. He was nearly 79 years old.

The McGlathery family has long been prominent in the region and for many years well known in Polk township. The late Col. J. E. McGlathery [John Edward McGlathery], auctioneer, was one of Abraham's brothers.

John McGlathery [John Dudley McGlathery], the son mentioned, was in Big Rapids when word came of his father's death. Big Rapids is 950 miles from Plesant Hill, but the young man, accompanied by his wife [Viola Roche], was on the road promptly. They drove with scarce an intermission, not stopping for a rest, and were here several hours ahead of the time set for the funeral.

It may be well said in conclusion, passing earnest tribute is a man long the fond friend of the writer, that A. R. McGlathery [Abraham Reed McGlathery] ("Abe," as he was familiarly known
to many) was an earnest, honest, hard-working man, who had piously[?] earned and steadfastly held the respect and good will of those among whom his lot was cast. Through good fortune and bad, of both which he had his share, he was always the same[,] a sunny natured sort of person, likable, dependable, responsible[?]. So he had his many friends, as well as those loved ones of the home circle, who cherished him and who are sad that he has gone."
