Zephaniah Swift Moore was born at Palmer, Massachusetts, November 20, 1770, son of Judah and Mary Moore. His father removed to Wilmington, Vermont, in 1778, and he worked on the farm until 1788. He attended a preparatory school at Bennington, Vermont, 1788-89, and was graduated from Dartmouth College, A. B. in 1793, and A. M. in 1796.
He was in charge of an academy at Londonderry, New Hampshire, in 179394, removing in the latter year to Somers, Connecticut, where he studied theology under the Rev. Dr. Backus. He was licensed to preach by the Tolland County Association on February 3, 1796, and was pastor at Leicester, Massachusetts, in that and the following years.
