George Cabot was born in Salem, Massachusetts, December 3, 1751. He received a careful preparatory education, and studied for two years at Harvard College. Then, moved probably by a restless disposition and a desire for knowledge and experience, he went to sea. His abilities seem to have been of the best, since before his majority he was placed in command of a ship, with which for several years he was engaged in foreign trade, and soon after his return home in 1775 he was chosen a delegate to the first Massachusetts Provincial Congress, assembled at Concord.
