Thomas Lindall Winthrop was born at New London, Connecticut, March 6, 1760, son of John Still Winthrop and Jane (Borland) Winthrop, and a descendant in the fifth generation of Governor John Winthrop. He prepared for college at Lebanon. Connecticut, and at the age of sixteen entered Yale College, but at the end of two years was honorably dismissed, and completed his education at Harvard College, where he was graduated in 1780.
He then made a journey to the south for the improvement of his health, and afterward spent some time traveling through England, France and Holland.
