John Contee entered the United States Navy, and, for gallant conduct, received a vote of thanks from the Maryland Legislature, which presented him with a sword and medals. He retired from the navy with rank of lieutenant, and died November 15, 1839, at his home, "Pleasant Prospect," which he devised to his son John. His will shows him to have been possessed of great wealth, part of which was inherited, and part acquired by his marriage with Miss Duckett, whose father was one of the most opulent planters of his State.
