Aged: 69.9 years On 12 Sep 1918, Tamakichi was required to sign up for the military draft in Sutter County, California. His physical description is as follows:
height: short build: slender eyes: brown hair: black [any disqualifying disabilities]: none
In his old age, Tamakichi had tuberculosis. After the Japanese Exclusion Order he stayed in Gridley Memorial Hospital for two years. He died alone at the hospital while the rest of the family was either serving in the U.S. Army (his son, Harold), or in internment camps.
Note that in 1902, when he came from the port of Vancouver, British Columbia on his way to San Francisco, the title of the collection is titled, "Vermont, St. Albans Canadian Border Crossings, 1895-1954." However, if you click on the original, you will see up at the top that they record was made in Vancouver, British Columbia, and most definitely not Vermont.

Aged: 89.5 years Suyeno came to America as a "picture bride." Following the customary practice for those who had gone to America as single men, the couple, who had not previously met, exchanged photos and letters, and the marriage was arranged in that way.
During World War II, Suyeno and her children were forced to go an internment camp, and to leave her husband, who was too sick to go with them, and who eventually died in the hospital all alone. Meanwhile, their son, Harold, served in the U.S. Army.
We have a record of Suyeno Nakamoto arriving on an airplane in 1951. She was likely visiting her relatives in Japan, and she was a widow at that time. It is certainly Suyeno Sugiyabu Nakamoto, as her residence was shown to be in Gridley, California, where her family had been living.
Contrary to her record of Takusuke Sugiyabu being her father, in her 1910 passenger list, her father was listed as Shintei Nakamoto of 149 Kanagawa Mura, Japan. This Shintei Nakamoto was, in fact, her future father-in-law, and this record is what gives us his name.
