A ship's passenger list dated 15 Jan to 19 Feb 1924, shows that Shunjiro Sakaoka; his wife, Hawayo; and children; Toshio and Hideo, visited Niho Mura, Hiroshima Ken., Japan. The line for Shunjiro shows he had been living in Sacramento, California. However, the line for his wife and two children, indicated they were living in Niho Mura, Hiroshima Ken., Japan with her husband and the children's father.

That may or may not have been the situation. However, the name of Shunjiro's nearest relative in the country from which he came says it was, "his father," Seitaro Sakaoa of 230, Niho Mura, Hiroshima Ken.  The line for Shunjiro's wife says she was with her hsuband, while the line for the children say they were with parents.

The final destination was Sacramento, California.

The next page says Shumjiro had previously been to the U.S. from 1909 to 1923, in Sacramento, California. The line for his wife said she had been there with her husband from 1920 to 1923. The children were said to have been born in 1923 and they lived there with their parents.

Shunjir was listed as 5 feet, 2 inches tall, while his wife was 5 feet, one inch tall.  The place of birth for both husband and wife was Niho Mura, while the children were botn born in Sacramento.

The ship was the Tenyo Maru.

NOTE: The link goes to the index page for Shunjiro Sakaoka. However, the original document (which can be accessed through a link on the index page) goes to the original document. The original is two pages long. The Sakaoka family can be seen on the second page, numbers 3-6. The family at that time consisted of Shunjiro, Hawayo (his wife) and Toshio and Hideo (his sons).

After the shameful incarceration of Shunjiro, with his wife, Hawao, and children: Hideo, Masako, Numiko Ruth and Yukiko, at the Jerome reson, location facility, he was released with his wife and youngest child to Lodi, California.  His son, Hideo, was released to Chicago, where he lived the rest of his life. His son, Masako, was released to Cleveland, Ohio.

Third daughter.

There is some question as to where Hawayo was born. Family lore says she was born in Hawaii, and that is how she came to be named, "Hawayo." The 1900 and 1930 censuses corroborates this place of birth. However, her Social Security application gives the exact place in Hiroshima, Japan, where she was supposedly born, Houna Nihomachi Hiroshima Shi, Japan.

This is undoubtedly where here parents lived before coming to Hawaii, and probably where Hawayo lived when the family went back to Japan for awhile, but it probably was not where Hawayo, herself, was born.

However, she was, indeed, born in Hawaii. Earlier records tend to be more accurate than later ones. Also, in answering questions, there were undoubtedly translations, and sometimes exact information gets lost during that process. There can be no disputing that Hawayo and her birth family were, indeed, in Hawaii in 1900, which was three years after her birth.  The "smoking gun," though, was her birth record in Hawaii:

Hawayo Okada, born 19 Feb 1897 in Waiahea, Hilo, Hawaii.  Her father was listed as Motoyemon Okada, and her mother was Tora Okada.  The original record requires careful reading, as there are a number of children listed. Further, the index has some mistakes1) the date is not clear, and 2) the mother's name was shown as Fora Okada. However, a careful reading shows the correct date and the mother's first name of Tora.

Hawayo was definitely born in Hawaii, the place for which she was named.
