Judge Richard Gantt
The Hon. Richard Gantt, son of Thomas Gantt, Jr. and Susanna Mackall, his wife, was born at the old homestead of the family at White's Landing, Patuxet River, Prince George County, Maryland, Aug. 2d, 1767. Studied for the profession of the law under guidance of William Pinckney, the great statesman and orator, and reputed to have been the most eloquent and learned lawyer of his time. A remarkably strong personal resemblance was recognized
as existing between the preceptor and pupil. He removed to South Carolina in early life, and with him came and began the name in this State.
From letter by James Lawrence Gantt
This Sarah Allen (my grandmother) was said tak e been a girl of rare beauty. During the progress of the Washington through the Southern states, and at a ball given to him at
the city of Augusta, Georgia, he selected her as his first partner for the dance as "the loveliest girl in the room". She was one of the mildest, gentlest, dearest old ladies I
have ever seen. Her sweet old face, with her close fitting cap always of the samegpattern is as visible to me now as ever in life I saw it. What soft ways, lovable ways, she had.
I think of those two old people as I saw th m -- tho' so long ago laid to rest -- with the most reverential affection. With what elegance of manner would he stand at the dinner
table until she entered and took her seat -- and the grace with which he always bowed as she passed and waved her to her seat -- marked the courtly gentleman as worthy of the Royal Blood in his veins. My father loved his mother with a devotion rarely exhibited, and he taught me as a child, to love her; but I know that I loved her more when I was old enough to appreciate her. My grandfather was much attached to me, and always claimed companionship when I was near him. notes from a letter by James Lawrence Gantt
