Sandra L. Varney

Aged: 77.8 years
Sandra "Sandy" Varney Spoonamore, 77, passed away peacefully on August 08, 2022. Born on October 22, 1944, in Lexington, KY, she remained a life-long resident of the city. She was a daughter of the late Louise Howard Varney and James Albert Varney Sr. of Lexington.
Sandy was a graduate of Lafayette High School (Class of 1963). Like her father and older sisters before her, Sandy was also drawn to a career in the medical profession. She attended the University of Kentucky and was a graduate of the St. Joseph Hospital School of X-Ray Technology. She began working as an X-Ray technician at the Woodford Memorial Hospital in Versailles and then, after a brief stint at the University of Kentucky, spent the majority of her career at the office of Dr. Robert P. Goodman where she was an X-Ray technician and later added the duties of office manager to that role.
This wonderful mother filled her children's lives with much love and laughter. And, although the humor present in the Varney household in which she was raised was harnessed most dynamically by younger brother, actor/comedian Jim Varney, it also instilled in her a wonderful sense of humor and an ability to put a smile on the face of those around her. Her children fondly recall summers filled with endless trips to the movie theatre (enjoying the candy she snuck in her purse) and to Spindletop Hall where she enjoyed getting caught up on her favorite books while letting her kids play for hours.
Although never published, she was a talented writer and enjoyed attending writing groups with sister Jake. She also excelled in other creative ventures such as crafting and baking. For many years she would accompany older sister Jo Gail to Court Days in Mount Sterling where they would sell the cream candy, peanut butter roll, chocolate fudge and other sweets they had made.
Sandy was a Christian and attended many churches throughout her life including Immanuel Baptist Church and Christ Centered Church in Lexington.
In addition to her parents, Sandy was preceded in death by her husband Grady Spoonamore, sister Jo Gail Kelly and brother Jim Varney. She is survived by her daughter, Andrea Lloyd (Eric Boggs) and son, Justin Lloyd. She is also survived by her sister Janice Ann "Jake" McIntyre (Jim McIntyre), nieces Shannon Kelly (Arnold Stalk) and Elaine McIntyre (Jason Kingsland), nephew Brad Kelly, granddaughters Eden, Talia, and Greta Lloyd, as well as several grandnieces and grandnephews.
A celebration of life will be held at the Milward-Man O' War, 1509 Trent Blvd, Lexington, Kentucky on Thursday, August 18th, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.
