Docs + — | Other, : "Carter was a friend and benefactor of William and mary College, serving it as rector, trustee and member of the board of visitors. Building at his own expense Christ Church, Lancaster Co, still standing he reserved, in addition to a large pew for his immediate family, one-fourth of the building for the use of his tenants and servants. The tombstones of the "King" and his wives in the churchyard were described in 1838 by Bishop meade as probably the largest, richest, and heaviest in the United States. his first wife was Judith (Armistead) Carter (died 1699), his second, Elizabeth (Landon) Carter (died 1710), of the family of Landon, herefordshire, Eng. The children of these unions married into the first families of the colony, and, as a result of a fortunate blending of superior strains, Carter had an unusual number of distinguished descnedants--two presidents of the United States, {Harrison} six governors of VA, Gen. Robert E. Lee, and many others."
