Investigating a Mysterious Death
Kennicott died unexpectedly, at age 30 during an expedition in what's now Alaska. Smithsonian forensic anthropologists studied Kennicott's remains, letters about his health, and the expedition accounts to learn the cause of death.
Though Kennicott's bones, hair, and tissues contained traces of arsenic, mercury, and strychnine—substances often used by 19th century naturalists to collect and preserve specimens—the investigators determined Kennicott died of heart disease. Read More
