Richard Nixon's mother, Hannah Milhous, came in an early wave of emigrants from Butlerville, Indiana to Whittier, California with her parents in the late 1880's, because it epitomized the tranquility of Quaker living. Nixon's father, Frank, came to Whittier much later.
Frank and Hannah met in February 1908 and were married four months later; Frank became a Quaker. Hannah and Frank had five sons, one of whom was Richard who was born in 1913 in Yorba Linda, a farming village thirty miles inland from Los Angeles, California.
