John Cain was born to Elder Rowland Wilkinson and Margaret Cain.

John Cain Wilkinson married Philadelphia Van Norman of Liberty, MS on January
28, 1845. They had six children. On May 24, 1866 he married his second wife
Mary Eliza Jackson and they had one child. After she passed, he married
Margaret Jackson Toler on January 23, 1868, and three children from this union.
She passed two years later on January 25, 1870.

He enlisted in the Confederate States of America Army from March 10, 1862 to
February 2, 1865. John served as a private in Company K, 33rd Regiment
Mississippi Volunteers. He was wounded for life at New Hope Church on May 29,
1864 and hospitalized at Augusta GA.

He returned to his beloved Mississippi and followed in his father’s footsteps
and was ordained as an Elder in the Plymouth Primitive Baptist Church in Liberty
MS. This is the church his father, Elder Rowland Wilkinson founded in 1857.
John served as pastor from December 1871 until his death in May of 1911. His
son Zachariah Jefferson Wilkinson continued in his father and grandfather’s
footsteps as pastor of this church.

He passed on May 9, 1911 in Liberty Mississippi. He was laid to rest next to
his first wife Philadelphia in the Van Norman Cemetery, east of Liberty, MS.

Although the tombstone inscriptions on US GenWeb for Van Norman Cemetery indicate that John Cain Wilkinson was the son of Micajah Wilkinson and his wife Mary Kennedy, that identification cannot be correct since Micajah Wilkinson had died long before John Cain Wilkinson was born. Instead, Micajah Wilkerson and wife Mary Kennedy were the grandparents of John Cain Wilkinson, who was the son of the Rev. Rowland Wilkinson and wife Margaret Cain.

CHURCHES, p.359. Amite County Historical Fund, Birmingham, Ala. 1950...
as reported from the Plymouth Baptist Church Minutes of Jan 20, 1866.
"On motion the following preamble & resolution was read & adopted,
namely: Whereas our Heavenly Father has been pleased to take from our connection our much esteemed & beloved sister Philadelphia D. Wilkinson, who died on the 28th day of October last, of billious pneumonia, being 35 years of age. Her walk as a Christian was good & should be imitated by surviving friends. She was one of the four who first raised the warning voice against the many false tenets practiced by the popular Baptists of this country; and although we as the church mourn the loss, yet we feel sure that hers is the gain, as she died in the triumph faith.
Resolved that the above preamble be placed upon our record as a token of our high regard for our departed sister & that we sympathize with the bereaved family."

c. Philadelphia Van Norman Wilkinson is reported to have died in what was known as the "Taylor Place" five miles west of Liberty. It appears Philadelphia's father, Hiram, purchased the property sometime before 1833, although a record of the land transaction has not been found.
Below is found a brief excerpt of a biographical sketch written by Philadelphia's youngest sister, Sarah Ann Van Norman McLainz, and which is published in THE VAN NORMAN FAMILY, complied by Betty McCurty Wallis and Lois Hayes Culver, 1991, p.39-41.
THE LIFE OF HIRAM VAN NORMAN, AS I REMEMBER

His mother was Lucretia Woodward, first cousin to William and Eben Woodward of near Clinton, La. They were all reared in Canada. She had one sister, Anana Woodward, and a half sister, Lorean Rose. After Great Grandpa Woodward died, their mother married Hirman Rose.

... My father bought what was called the Taylor place five miles west
Liberty. There Aunt Phila Mary died. Mary and Garnet were born. Some were born in Liberty in '37, where the old J.C. Anderson home was. He then moved where Plymouth Church now stands. There Lucretia was born in `40. In `42 he went back to Taylor place and there was where I was born. I was born in `42. He went with my mother, Garnet, Sam, Lucretia and myself to Bloomington, Ind. and spent nearly a year on account of my mother's health. We returned in the fall and he then bought the Tannery on Speculation Creek on west line of town of Liberty.
There he lived and died. He made quite a success in the tannery business until the War came on...

d. Philadelphia Van Norman Wilkinson died on 28 Oct 1865 in Liberty,
Amite Co. MS. She is buried along side her husband in the Van Norman Cemetery outside of Liberty, MS
(Personal visit to the cemetery in April 1995 by Pat Ezell who was taken there by Nona Punchard, a cousin through the ROBERTS, VAN NORMAN & WILKINSON lines.)

Notes from Marlene Wilkinson - March 29, 2004
Actually, the name of the person who was the mother of Elizabeth Saunders Walden is Rachel Noe, daughter of Samuel Noe. I don't know the documentation for that. Will try to see if I can find out. I am on this list for the Waldens. I found a website on Gail Borden, Jr. His mother was Philadelphia Wheeler Borden. You remember the story goes that she talked Elizabeth's sister into letting her have Elizabeth and adopted her. When Elizabeth was married, she gave her name as Walden though. Would you not think that she would have said Bortden if she had been legally adopted? Anyway Gail Borden, Jr. did come to Amite County before he went to TX. I have always wondered what the B. was for on Phila's tombstone. It just dawned on me that it was probably for Philadelphia Borden. In doing a little research on the Borden family, I found they are my cousins. We are both descendants of Roger Williams of Rhode Island.
