W. J. Quarles was a teacher for 12 years in Tennessee. When he moved his family to Long Beach, Mississippi there was no school so he began teaching in his home. Later he founded and established Quarles Elementary School which is still functional today (2012), and donated land for it to be built on.

He became a business owner when he opened the first general store in Long Beach. In September 1884 he was appointed the first Postmaster of Long Beach distributing the mail out of part of his general store. He was also a truck farmer with some of the area farmers selling vegetables, etc., from his business.

He was a man of action who did what was needed to build and help his family and community.

This information is found in "Rosalie and Radishes, A History of Long Beach, Mississippi", by Mary Ellen Alexander.
