A graduate of West Point, 1850. By 1860 he was a captain, but resigned his commission in 1861 and was appointed a major in the Confederate Army. He served as a logistician in many of the principal campaigns of the war. At White River he was made a brigadier general. He was captured during a cavalry raid in Missouri in October 1864. After the war he studied law in Arkansas, and moved to Dallas in late 1872. He was many times elected the Mayor of Dallas. Later the Honorary Commander-in-Chief of the Confederate Veterans.

Mrs. Harriette Amanda Cabell was Miss Harriette Amanda Rector, daughter of Major Elias and Catherine Rector, of Fort Smith, Arkansas. Col. Rector was U.S. Indian agent and subsequently U.S. Marshall.
