Jonas served in the Swedish army for a time under the name, Jonas Skold. Before that, he was known as Jonas Jonsson because his father's first name was Johan, a form of the name, John.  This was the custom for most Swedes at the time.  However, going into the military created problems because there were very few first names upon which the last names were based, meaning that there were a lot of people named, Jonas Jonsson. To solve that problem, the Swedish army gave men a "soldier-name." That way, when a person's name was called, there were not a whole bunch of men coming to attention and saluting.  Men were allowed to keep their soldier-names after their service.  All but the oldest son, who had emigrated in 1869, chose to use their father's solder-name of Sjölin, instead.

That name went through several metamorpheses, especially for Jonas, before settleing on Sholin. It was Sjölin, Sjoline, Sholine, Sholen, and finally, Sholin.

It has been found that Jonas served a sentence in a Swedish prison for a short time. Who knows if it was fair? Perhaps this was something that helped him decided to emigrate.  He does not ever seem to have gotten in trouble in the U.S.  In America, Jonas married and fathered a large family for whom he provided reasonably well from all appearances.

Family sources say that Jonas and his family came out west in a wagon train. In 1885, his wife and child were living in the household of his brother, Peter, with Jonas himself not present. From this, it is easy to extrapolate that Jonas may have gone west by himself to check out the possibilities. If so, he either went back to Kansas to collect his family, or they came out separately, perhaps with Peter, or another of their brothers.

Sophia's father's name was likely Hansson in Sweden. "Hansen" is the spelling used mostly in Denmark and Norway. The Swedes use " - sson" as a name suffix, doubling the "s" using an "o," instead of an "e."

According to  Frank David Sholin's passport from the 30's (information sent by the late Paul David Sholin), Sophia was born 27 Jan 1865 in Baggbo, St. Tuna, Dalarne, Sweden. This is contrary to information on the other page as is the following from the same source: Sophia died 29 Jan 1931 and is buried beside Jonas (Jonas listed at Mt. Scott Park, Hillside Section From 360 Lincoln St. #124. Also listed was the following: 414 E. Alda St.)

William Sholin said his grandmother, Sophie, used to spear salmon with a fork at the end of a pole.

According to Holman & Lutz, Inc. Funeral Home records, Sophie had the following children: Edwin E., David, Stanford A., Eskel, George, Burnum, Elmer T. She also had ten grandchildren and three brothers ("bors.") and 1 sister.
