The "History of the early settlers of Sangamon County, Illinois : "centennial record" (1876)" states that John S. Lake married Charlotte Brittian but there is nobody by that name in the 1850 or 1870 census forms for Sangamon County. John S. Lake is listed in the 1850 forms living with his parents and nearby in 1870 but with a wife named Mary. Also in his 1870 household are three people named Brittin (William, Lutitia & Dulcena) between the ages of 14 and 27, all too old to be children of John and Mary., There were Wm. and Mary of the equivalent ages in the Stephen Britton [sic] household in 1850. Either the Sangamon history book had the name wrong, that this John S. is not the same individual (unlikely), or his wife's name was Charlotte Mary or Mary Charlotte.

The Sangamon County book lists a Evan Brittin (1791-?) and Benjamin Britton (1797-1868) but the only Stephen of the appropriate age is Evan's son. Stephen & his wife, Jane McClelland both died before the 1870 census (1862 & 1864, respectively) so it would make sense that their other children might be living with their sister, Mary, and her husband. I used Brittin as the preferred name since it is used in the book and in one of the two census forms.
