  • Obituary, 10 JUL 1895: "'ALLEN R. MCGLATHERY: A Well Known and Respected Citizen of the Eighth Ward Dead.' After an illness of six weeks, Mr. Allen McGlathery died at 4:35 yesterday afternoon at his residence, 422 Forth avenue, of myocardities [sic.]. He was born March 23, 1852, and was consequently aged 43 years, 3 months, and 16 days. On May 21, 1871, he was married to Miss Ella Rutherford and to them were born eight children as follows: Mrs. Laura Synder, Walter, Effie, Cloyd, Agnes, Chester, and Herbert. He is also survived by two sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Sarah Carl of Afton, Iowa; Mrs. E. A. Breiseman [sic., Brenaman] of Altoona; William McGlathery, of Kent, Ohio; Jerry McGlathery of this city, and Lewis McGlathery Huntington, W. Va.
    [¶]The deceased was converted at the age of 14, joining the United Brethren church of this city. He was a faithful member of this church until the organization of the Second church, of which he became the charter member. He was always a consistent and efficient member, filling very acceptably important position in each church. He was well and favorably known in this city, having lived here all his life. In him the community lost a good citizen, the church a strong member, and his family a kind father and husband." - Altoona [PA] Tribune, 10 JUL 1895, p. 1.

  • Obituary, 04 APR 1922: "WILLIAM E. MCGLATHERY' William E. McGlathery of Kent O., died at 10 o'clock yesterday morning at his home of uremic poisoning. He was a brother of Jeremiah McGlathery of 516 Sixth avenue; Mrs. Sara Carl, of 1309 Seventh avenue, and Lewis S. McGlathery of Huntington, West Virginia. Mr. McGlathery was born on May 15, 1843. He was a son of Samuel and Elizabeth McGlathery, both deceased. He was a former member of the First United Brethren church of this city but later became an active worker in the Methodist church at Kent. The funeral will be held from his late home in Kent tomorrow afternoon. Seven or eight of his nephews and nieces from this city will leave this morning to attend the funeral."

  • Obituary, 11 FEB 1924: "'DEATH SUMMONS P. R. R. VETERAN
    Jeremiah McGlathery in Service 52 Years, Passed Away Yesterday'
    [¶]Morning at the home, 516 Sixth avenue, death caused by diseases incident to old age. He was born on August 7 1846 on the farm owned by his grandfather, Samuel McGlathery, the farm owned located on Kettle street. Shortly after his birth his father moved to a farm near the Three Culverts where he was raised.
    [¶]His entire life was spent in and about Altoona and when he was a boy he witnessed the initial run of the locomotive ever [manufactured in] the newly completed Pittsburg division. He entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad company on September 13, 1863, working in No. 1 Round house near Twelfth street. He retired about seven years ago with a record of almost fifty-two years of in the service of the company.
    [¶]He was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Barwis, of Altoona, on September 12, 1872 to which union three children were born, two of whom, W.E, and Endora, reside
    At home, and Rhoda who preceded him in death. He was also survived by his wife, one grandaughter, Elda Mae, one sister, Mrs. Sarah Carl of this city, and one brother L. S. McGlathery, of Huntington, W. Va.
    [¶]He was a lifelong member of the United Brethren church, and ater [sic.] he became a charter member of the Second United Brethern church of which he was a trustee until falling health compelled his retirement from active work.
    He was a member of the Logan lodge of Odd Fellows, the Co. shop. Floral association and the Railroad Relief association.
    [¶]Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:20 o'clock at the Second United Brethren church. Interment will be made in Fairview cemetery.

She was united in marriage with Jeremiah McGlathery on September 12, 1872, who preceded her to the grave March 7 of the present year. To their union was born three children: Rhoda, who died March 11, 1897, and Eudora and William of this city. She also has one grandchild, Elda McGlathery, and four sisters, Mrs. J. G. Plummer, of Conner Station, Pa., and Mrs. J. A. Lauver, Serena and Jannie Barwis of Birmingham, Pa. She was a charter member of the Second United Brethren church. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon in the Second United Brethren church. Interment will be in Fairview cemetery.
