"Reuben Bernard was born in Plattekill, Ulster County, on February 24, 1830. In 1852, he was admitted to the bar and began his law practice in Kingston. He was hired as attorney for the newly organized Huguenot Bank of New Paltz. In 1858, he became attorney for the Kingston National Bank, in 1868, its director and in 1877 he was elected its president, serving for over 35 years. He was the first president of the Board of Trade and held that office for many years. He died on July 1, 1916, at age 86."
