Ray Sutton, 38,years old is dead and Claude Fitzwater is severely injured as the result of an accident on Highway 71, about 300 yards south of the Prewitt filing station on the junction of Nos 71 and 7.
The accident occurred about 5 o’clock Wednesday afternoon. Sutton and Fitzwater, with several other men, were working on the shoulder on the west side of the slab. A Hudson coupe driven by J L Trimble of Nevada, Mo and a Chevrolet truck driven by a Mr Harlaman of Taperville, Mo were traveling south.
According to witnesses the Hudson passed the truck, skidding into the 3 ½ foot ditch on the west side of the road where the men were working. The Hudson struck Fitzwater, throwing him to the right, then Sutton was struck by the car and carried onto the slab when the car came out of the ditch. He fell from the front of the Hudson and the front and rear wheel of the truck passed over him, crushing his abdomen. After passing over Sutton the truck was struck by the Hudson, both truck and car going into the ___ ditch on the east of the road where the truck turned over. The Hudson went down the ditch and struck the head wall of a( bidget?) coming out of the ditch and stopping on the pavement, headed south.
Trimble was accompanied by his wife and another man. There were one or two passengers with Harlaman. None of these people were injured.
Both injured men were rushed to the Harrisonville Hospital where Sutton died early this morning. After receiving treatment Mr Fitzwater was taken to his home of this city.
