She was a very refined lady, immaculately and tastefully dressed and groomed. She was very attractive and always wore her diamond earrings and her diamond ring. She had a very fair complexion and cared about her appearance, going to the beauty parlor to have her pretty white hair set, etc. She also did beautiful knitting, creating beautiful knit suits and dresses. She had a great sense of humor. Despite geographical isolation in her younger years, she always had an active social life, according to her son, with much visiting and letter writing. She always had a reputation for good looks and charm.

She was concerned about the problems of educating her eight children in Henry County and was attracted to Salem, VA by its good schools and the availability of Roanoke College for the boys and Elizabeth College (now moved to Charlotte, NC, as Queen's College) for the girls. It was her idea to move the family to Salem in 1901.
