Charles Goldsborough, grandfather of the honored citizen of Baltimore who bore his name, was a son of Charles and Anna Maria (Tilghman) Goldsborough, and in 1794 graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. He began his congressional career in 1805 and served his district without interruption until 1817.
During these years the bitter opposition of the Republicans (or Democrats, as they would now be called) to the Federalists developed, and Mr. Goldsborough, as the champion of his party, was in the thickest of the fray.
