He was the only U.S. president to join the Confederacy. He was vice-president under William Henry Harrison, serving March-April 1841. He became president upon Harrison's death. 10th President of the United States. He became president following the death of William Henry Harrison. He did not run for election at the end of the term.

Letitia was the daughter of a Virginia Planter. She was an invalid when Tyler became president and made only one public appearance at her daughter, Elizabeth's marriage in 1842. She died in the White House. (Sherwood Forrest.org/Genealogy.html)

Letitia Christian was raised on a Virginia plantation, where her main duty was supervising the slaves. She had no formal education, and was by most accounts devoutly religious. She was engaged to John Tyler, the son of Virginia's Governor, for five years, and he once told his friends he had first kissed her -- on the hand -- a few weeks before they were married.
