These are comments made by Denise Davis Irish about her father, Leo Glen Davis, Jr. on the day the space shuttle, Endeavor, came through Houston on the way to California. September 19, 2012 the space shuttle just flew its last fly over around this part of the country that made it sooo great...while watching the breaking news on channel 2...i felt a huge rumble...ran outside and as if from a si-fi movie the piggy-back shuttle flew directly over my house...i could have hit it with my shotgun..no lie...this has such a special meaning for me...as my father was employed by NASA from the beginning of the program...he even had a huge part in the structure design of the plane it flew on top of...he was the one who brought them home...structure design meant that it would withstand the re-entry through the atmosphere without loosing a heat tile...which he had a big part of that design also...hardest part of that was to get them to stick to the metal...also to land without a blow-out...huge weight on little rubber tires...too bad car tire industries don't get it...yes... i am a space cadet...many thanks to my late father for all the fantastic sights...and even getting to meet astronauts throughout my life...getting to go to splash-down parties in the hangers at the air force base...he even organized several of those..and would laugh that they still called it a splash-down party when in all later cases was a landing without any water at all...except for that in our eyes...as they welled up with tears... of pride of what a few country boys could accomplish with a college degree...12 of 'em...structure design team...knew them all...most were born in the 1920's and 30's...such great visionaries that got no glory...and played such an important role in history...oh yeah...they were retired when the re-entry failed over our great state...thank God my father didn't know at the time(due to alzheimer's) he would have been so upset...thanks for the memories daddy...ok...now i'm having a splash-down party all by myself...one last cry for the glory days of the space program.
