Father born in Maryland; mother was born in Ireland
Parents were John Campbell, born in Maryland about 1815; and his wife, Ann, born in Ireland about 1832.
There are several links to the California Voter Registers for Emmet Campbell in Colusa, California. His age always corresponds to one which would have him born in about 1850. This may have been because he wanted to vote and was a bit underage. Also, all the links are for the same source.
The California Death Index shows an Emmett Campbell, age 81, born about 1847, who died in Fresno County 28 Feb 1828. There is no further information in this source. Is this the same man? It does not seem so, because this Emmett Campobell, who lived in Fresno in 1820, a widower, while he was born in Indiana, his aprents were born in Ohio, according to this record. If that's true, this is not the same man.
John Campbell's wife, Ann, does not appear to have been the biological mother of Emmet. Even the biological relationship to his father is somewhat in doubt. John's wife, Ann, tried to keep Emmet from inheriting John's estate. She said Emmet was an illegitimate child and that John took him in at age six weeks. There is some reason, though, to doubt the truth of this. In any case, John cared from him since infancy and referred to him as his son.
