Email: rtay... • 14-Aug-11 12:00 AM Dear Ray, what a great site you have created! Well done. I may I have a correction in the tree. I found your site by searching for William Thomas Carroll, who was clerk of the US Supreme Court at the time of Lincoln. We have an ancestor cousin of Charles Carroll of Carrollton. In tracing back the lineage, I landed on the page for: Daniel Carroll, b 1696, married to Eleanor Darnall, b 1704. I don't believe this is the correct Daniel Carroll ancestor of Wm. Thomas. According to the great history of the Carroll family, "Princes of Ireland, Planters of Maryland," by Ronald Hoffman (at the Univ of Virginia) your Daniel was known as Daniel Carroll of Upper Marlboro (which was the Maryland home town for the Carrolls). He indeed married Eleanor Darnall. Their b and d dates are accurate on your page. Hoffman's trees show that Wm. Thomas's ancestor was Daniel Carroll of Duddington (1707 - 1734), married to Ann Rozer (1710 - 1764). Their children were Charles, Eleanor and Mary. And just to confuse things, this Eleanor Carroll married the son of Daniel Carrol of Upper Marlboro, also called Daniel (of Rock Creek). So: backing up from William Thomas Carroll, to his father Charles (of Belle Vue), to his father Charles (of Duddington), your chart and Hoffman's are in sync. He then shows Daniel of Duddington as I cited above. This can be hopelessly confusing, since in good Irish fashion the Carrolls repeat the same first names through the generations...no doubt to confuse the English (and genealogy trackers!) I highly recommend the Hoffman book, it is exceedingly well researched and gives a wonderful portrait of life in the Chesapeake when the first Carroll (Charles, of course, called The Settler) arrived in 1688. He married Mary Darnall. (It can seem like there were only 10 or 12 families around at the time!) All best, Taylor [Son Charles has been moved over to the Daniel who married Ann Rozier -- Ray G.] |
