  • Obituary, : Edward S. Conrad was born in Harrisonburg, VA, the son of George Oliver Conrad (1823-1907) and his wife, Diana Smith (Yancey) Conrad (1831-1895). Edward S. Conrad attended U.Va. in session 50 (1873-1874), where he studied Law. In 1877, Edward partnered with his mother's brother, Charles A. Yancey, to form the law firm Yancey & Conrad in Harrisonburg. In 1891, Edward's brother, George N. Conrad, a State senator and a U.Va. alumnus, joined the firm, which became Conrad & Conrad. Edward S. Conrad was a Methodist and served on the board of trustees of Randolph-Macon College.

On 14 Nov. 1877, Edward S. Conrad married Virginia Smith Irick (1855-1933). This couple had four children: Dr. Charles Edward Conrad (U.Va. MD 1907), Mary Margaret Conrad (d. young), Laird Lewis Conrad, a lawyer (U.Va. 1905), and Evelyn E. Conrad (d. young). Laird Conrad joined his father in the family firm for a brief period in the early 1900s. Edward and Virginia Conrad are buried at the Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg.
