Edmund Kirby Smith
Aged: 68.9 years
The last full General in the Confederate War, on either side, died at his home in Sewanee, Tenn, March 28, 1893.
General Kirby Smith was a native of Florida, and graduated at West Point in 1845. He was a Major in the United States Army when he resigned to go with his own people in 1861. He was made a Confederate Brigadier in June, 1861, and a Major General in October of that year. In 1862 he was promoted to Lieutenant General, and in 1864 a full General. His achievements in the war are an interesting part of its history. President Davis is said to have told him, in assignment of the Trans-Mississippi Department, in 1863, that he gave him more authority than he dare put in writing.
