~~Death Notice~~
On Saturday last Col Thomas Brown Venable died at this home in Oxford, in his 70th year. He was the eldest son of the late Hon Abram W Venable, the eloquent, versatile, highly accomplished member of the United States House of Representatives for several Congresses. Col Venable was a lawyer, a good speaker at the bar and on the hustings, and had some of the gifts that gave such effectiveness to his eminent father's public addresses--earnestness, pathos, eloquence, keenness of repartee, readiness and wide reading. He practiced at the Granville bar from about 1848 until overtaken a year or so since by the disease that finally killed him. He was an excellent political campaigner, and while not holding political office did very effective work for the Democratic party in many campaigns before and since the war. His mother, a most noble, cultivated, remarkably intelligent lady, was born in Scotland, and in that land of the shamrock she had brothers and a sister who were wealthy and influential, one an officer in the famous Coldstream Guards and resided in the historic "Pinckey House." Col Venable once visited them prior to the war and returned with many trophies of their generosity and affection. He was graduated at Hampden-Sidney College, in Prince Edward County, Va, his father's native home. He was a first cousin of Professor Charles Venable, the great mathematician of the University of Virginia, who served on Gen Lee's staff.
He was a Lieutenant Colonel of the 24th North Carolina Regiment and afterwards served om Gen's Whiting's staff in this city. He was a member, as his parents and sisters were, of the Presbyterian Church for perhaps quite forty years. He has one survivng sister, Mrs Martin, wife of Rev Mr Martin of the Presbyterian Church, and Professor Samuel F Venable who resides near Asheville. He married Delia, eldest daughter of late Russell Kingsbury, and sister of the editor of the Messenger. She and a son and daughter survive him. We trust he was ready for his departure from this transitory world and is at rest among the redeemed and saved.-The Wilmington Messenger Tues Jun 26, 1894
