Webster Appleton Edgar, a son of Newbold and Caroline LeRoy [née Appleton] Edgar, was born in New York City on 8 April 1864. After his father died in 1869 in Germany, Webster's mother who was a great-granddaughter of Daniel Webster, married Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte, grand-nephew of Emperor Napoleon.

On September 2nd 1881, Webster Edgar, entered the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis and graduated Class of 1886.

Webster Appleton married Miss Matilda Emory of Washington, D.C. on the 20th of June 1888 and had 3 children:
Campbell Dallas (1889-1961)
Constance Louise (1891-1910)
Webster Leroy (1893-1949)

Commissioned Naval Commander on February 25th 1909 and retired January 13th 1915.

After Matilda died in 1915, Comdr. Edgar married Miss Elspeth Dalgleish on October 9th 1916 in Montreal. No known children were born to this union
