John T. Groves, Former Esopus Supervisor Dies
Former Town of Esopus Supervisor John T. Groves, 72, died suddenly Sunday at his home, 156 Salem Street, Port Ewen.
Prominent in town and county Republican politics for many years, Mr. Groves was supervisor from 1944 to 1947. He served as Ulster County treasurer from 1949-1952.
Treasurer of the Ulster County Republican Committee for a number of years, he was a member of all county Republican clubs.
Born in Port Ewen June 11, 1891, he was a son of the late George and Ellen Guy Groves. For over 35 years he owned and operated the John T. Groves General Trucking concern. Since his retirement 10 years ago, he and his wife, the former Elsie Hotaling have made their home at their winter residence in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. They observed their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 18, 1962.
Was Vols President
Active in the community, Mr. Groves was a member and former officer of Port Ewen Reformed Church. He was a member of Port Ewen Fire Department and a member and past president of the Ulster County Volunteer Firemen's Association.
A veteran of World War I, he had been a member of the American Legion for 44 consecutive years and was a charter member of the Town of Esopus Post 1298. He was also a member of the Society of 40 & 8, Voiture No. 381.
Fraternally, Mr. Groves was a member of Rondout Lodge No. 343, F&AM, Royal Arch Masons, Cypress Temple of Albany, Rondout Commandery, Knights Templar, Ulster County Shrine Club and Kingston Lodge 550, BPO Elks. He was also a member of Kingston Kiwanis and the Grand Street Boys Club of New York City.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Dorothea, wife of Edward L. Flick of Kingston; a grandson, Edward John Flick; a nephew, Joseph Murphy of West Hurley and several cousins.
Funeral services will be held at Port Ewen Reformed Church Wednesday, 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Ronald D. Lokhorst, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. George Berens and the Rev. Harry F. Christiana, former pastors of the church. Friends may call at the residence, 156 Salem Street, Port Ewen, Monday and Tuesday afternoon and evening. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Jesse McHugh of Wallkill.
