| John Edward Pope II was my grandfather. He was a successful businessman in Williamston, NC where he established his own insurance agency. At one time he was chairman of the Martin County Board of Commissioners. He married my grandmother, Nannie Biggs in 1916. After their marriage he brought her home to a large three story home he had built on Haughton St. in Williamston, NC. He needed a large house since it would be inhabited not only by my grandmother and him but also by his mother, a "spinster" sister , Anna Pope, as well as two growing sons. I don't remember much about my grandfather except that he did like to hide a stash of caramels in his bedroom which he would share with his grandchildren. |

| Nannie Biggs Pope was my grandmother. She was educated as a school teacher at what is now known as the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Greensboro, NC. She attended around 1910-1913.After marrying my grandfather in 1916, She settled in Williamston, NC. My grandparents lived in a large "Queen Anne" style house on Haughton St. which still stands today (2004).My father was born in that house 1918 followed by a set of fraternal twins in 1920. The twins were stillborn. My uncle, Warren Biggs Pope, was the last, born in 1923. he was born with a congenital heart defect which meant that he would need to be educated at home by my grandmother. My grandmother contracted trichinosis and died from complications of the disease on Oct. 4, 1936, her twentieth wedding anniversary. Her sons both graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.My grandfather died in 1957 followed by my uncle Warren in 1959. |
