Immigrant -- *could* be son of John Gurgeny & Dorothie as they did have a son Edward, but not confirmed that he's the same one.
-- alternate birthdate: 6/4/1582
-- first General Assembly, Jamestown, VA 1619

Immigrant -- With the difference in Anne's and Edward's birthdates, this may not be the correct Anne for this Edward. -- As Thomas Harris inherited land from Anne Gurgaynie (neighbors), it is possible that Anne had no children. Thus son Edward Gurgany Jr. may not be correct.-- Link to Thomas Harris' Record

I have found only that Edward Gurgany, Gentleman, married Anne? He appears to have come to Virginia by himself with the expedition of Admiral Christopher Newport and Captain John Smith aboard the 'Phoenix' Mr. Nelson, Master, 30 April 1608. Adria Gurgany, probably his daughter, came to Virginia in 1621 aboard the 'Marmaduke.' Anne Gurgany outlived Edward, and left a will dated 11 Feb 1619 in which she left land to her son-in-law, Thomas Harris. This was a common custom in those days, and there are indications, but no proof that Adria Gurgany Harris didn't live long past her marriage. Thomas Harris' will mentions his daughter, Mary Ligon. Colonel Thomas Lygon's will was signed 10 Jan 1675/76 and mentions his wife Mary Lygon, who was granted rights of administration by Thomas' kinsman, Governor Berkeley. Mary Harris Lygon's will is dated 10 Mar 1702/03 and recorded 1 Feb 1703/04. It mentions daughter, Johanah Hancock and son-in-law Robert Hancock. I have not found Edward Gurgany's will, but he must have had one. It seems very odd that someone of his social standing and with such a distinctive name is so difficult to pinpoint back in England.
[Editor's Note: According to info posted on my Edward Gurgany page, one theory is that Adria Gurgany didn't exist.] |

I have a copy of Captain John Smithe's autobiography. He lists all the settlers who arrived on the first supply. He list Edward Gurganey(ny) as "Edward Gurganas". Any thoughts? -------- Ray's response: I have not seen this particular reference, but it sounds logical that it's the same person. The theory is (and only a theory as I don't believe there is any actual evidence) that Edward Gurgany was the ancestor of Gurganus's 2 or 3 generations later. So it's possible that Edward's name also had variations in this direction.
